20 Years of the Causeway Coast AONBHome > News > 20 Years of the Causeway Coast AONB Wednesday, Mar 11 2009 2009 sees the 20 year anniversary of the Causeway Coast AONB. Extending for 30 km along the North Antrim Coast, the AONB bears numerous stories, myths and legends. Over the years the sea and coast has offered many fruits in terms of local produce and also the rich stories that are embedded in our culture. The AONB hosts Northern Ireland's only World Heritage Site - the Giant's Causeway and Causeway Coast - a true recognition of this special and dynamic place.
The Causeway Coast AONB was designated in 22nd March 1989 by the Department of Environment (NI) under the 1985 Nature Conservation and Amenity Lands Order (NI). To mark this special year the Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust is planning a series of events which will include the organisation of a school photographic competition with 6 local primary schools. It will also include a series of guided walks and tours to explore this rugged and dramatic landscape, its wildlife, sea life and its rich built and cultural heritage.
The organisation of the NAAONB annual conference in the Causeway Coast AONB in July will also provide further opportunities to celebrate the 20 years of the designation of this extraordinary area. |
