World Heritage Site Management
Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1986, the Giant's Causeway and Causeway Coast is Northern Ireland's only World Heritage Site and one of only 890 in the world, these include 689 cultural,176 natural and 25 mixed properties in 148 States. With all World Heritage Sites it is recommended by UNESCO that the responsible authorities draw up a management plan for each site. A Management plan for the Giant's Causeway and Causeway Coast WHS was produced in 2005.
Management of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty
Although NIEA is responsible for their designation the task of managing the countryside within the AONB is spread amongst many bodies. Sharing information and agreeing a common agenda are therefore important aspects of management of those AONB's designated since 1985. Three of these are located within the Causeway Coast and Glens, the Causeway Coast AONB and the Antrim Coast and Glens AONB and the Binevenagh AONB. Part of the Sperrin AONB is also with the Trust area.
It is recognised that AONB designation creates a platform for the full and formal consideration of local issues through the preparation of a management plan or strategy. Such plans can also consider in detail the nature and format of locally tailored management structures. Together these can better facilitate the sustainable management of the areas concerned. The formation of the Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust brought together local authorities and representatives of the tourism and farming industries, environmental groups and community organisations. One of the Trust's main objectives is to provide a mechanism to assist with the management of AONBs in the area.
The Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust has set up a Management Group for each of the three AONBs with representatives from central government, local authorities and environmental, economic and community sectors. For each of the AONB Management Plan has been produced and is being implemented.
Each management structure report back to the Board of the Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust.
