Sperrin AONB

Banagher Glen

The Causeway Coast and Glens area also includes a small northern section of the Sperrin AONB. Like the Binevenagh AONB Sperrin was designated under the earlier1965 Amenity Lands Act. Similarly Environment and Heritage Service are currently considering it's possible re designation and it is expected that following this exercise a local management structure will be agreed for the area.

The Sperrin AONB lies at the heart of Northern Ireland and encompasses a largely mountainous area of great geological complexity. Stretching from the Strule valley in the west to the edge of Lough Neagh lowlands in the east this area presents vast expanses of moorland penetrated by narrow glens and deep valleys. In it's south the Burren area is noted for it's lakes, sandy eskers and other geological features. The area is rich in historic and archaeological heritage and folklore.
